Rainbow Springs State Park is found about 15 miles northeast of Crystal River, FL. Popular attractions at this park include swimming, canoeing, snorkelling or walking through the gardens and looking for the natural inhabitants of the park.
There are interpretive panels throughout this park that explain the process of making sugar. The original plantation house was destroyed in 1864 by union blockaders, however there is enough history here to entice visitors into learning more of the history of the area.
The Crystal River Archaeological State Park features an on-going excavation of local archaic sites in an effort to better undertsand the history of this area. Visitors are encouraged to join in and experience a controlled dig, however those interested parties are asked to call ahead and book a spot.
